Trump’s dance causes a stir in the American sports world

Donald Trump’s signature dance during the election campaign has been used by athletes as a celebration.

US President-elect Donald Trump often performed a familiar dance to the song Y.M.C.A. After winning the presidential election, his arm-slapping dance became a craze not only on social media, but also performed by athletes when celebrating their victory.

On November 18, US soccer player Christian Pulisic became the latest person to perform Mr. Trump’s dance, when he scored the opening goal in the US team’s 4-2 victory over Jamaica.

Before that, when mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Jon Jones defeated opponent Stipe Miocic in a match within the framework of the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) at Madison Square Garden, New York City on November 16, an event attended by Mr. Trump.

The dance has even spread to the National Football League (NFL), the country’s most popular sport, with San Francisco 49ers player Nick Bosa becoming one of the first NFL players to do the Trump-style celebration after winning on November 10. “All my teammates wanted me to do it. I wasn’t even going to do it, but they reminded me, and it was fun,” Bosa told the San Francisco Chronicle. Another NFL player, Las Vegas Raiders player Brock Bowers, also did the president-elect’s signature dance, saying he “modeled” it on UFC fighter Jon Jones.

In golf, which is a favorite sport of Mr. Trump, British golfer Charley Hull imitated the above dance while moving on the course, during the final round with opponent Nelly Korda at the Annika tournament at Pelican Golf Club, Florida (USA) on November 17.
